Indication / application

  • The medicinal product contains dry yeast from cultures of the defined strain Saccharomyces cerevisiae HANSEN CBS 5926 (also called Saccharomyces boulardii in medical parlance) in a viable form for diarrhea and acne.
  • It is used:
    • For the treatment of symptoms of acute diarrhea.
    • For the prevention and treatment of complaints from traveler's diarrhea and diarrhea with tube feeding.
    • For supportive treatment for chronic forms of acne.

dosage

  • Always take this medicine exactly as directed. Please ask your doctor or pharmacist if you are not sure.
  • Dosage:
    • Unless otherwise prescribed by the doctor, the usual dose for children over 2 years and adults is:
      • To prevent traveler's diarrhea, 1 - 2 hard capsules a day starting 5 days before departure.
      • For acute diarrhea 1 - 2 hard capsules a day.
      • Take 3 hard capsules daily for acne.
      • In case of diarrhea caused by tube feeding, give 750 mg (= content of 3 hard capsules) once a day in 1.5 liters of nutrient solution.

 

  • Duration of application
    • Treatment should continue for a few days after the diarrhea has ended.
    • For supportive treatment of chronic forms of acne, it is recommended to take it over several weeks.
    • In principle, no restrictions on the duration of use are known for taking yeast preparations.
    • In any case, please note the information in the "Patient information" and "Side effects" categories.
    • Please talk to your doctor or pharmacist if you have the impression that the effect of the medicine is too strong or too weak.

 

  • If you take more than you should
    • Poisoning with preparations from dry yeast have so far not been reported.
    • If you take more than you should, tell a doctor. The latter can decide on any necessary measures. The side effects listed below may be more pronounced.

 

  • If you forget to take it
    • If you have taken too little or have forgotten to take it, do not take a double dose next time, but continue to take it as prescribed by your doctor or as described in the dosage instructions.

 

  • If you stop taking it
    • The intake can be interrupted or stopped at any time, since stopping is usually harmless.

 

  • If you have any further questions on the use of this medicine, please ask your doctor or pharmacist.

  • Please take the hard capsules whole without chewing with sufficient liquid (e.g. a glass of water) before meals.
  • For children under 6 years of age, open the hard capsule by pulling the capsule halves apart and stir the contents into food or liquid (room temperature).
  • In the case of diarrhea caused by tube feeding, only the contents of the capsules should be added to the nutrient solution.

Side effects

  • Like all medicines, this medicine can have side effects, although not everybody gets them.
  • The following frequency information is used to evaluate side effects:
    • Very common: more than 1 in 10 people treated
    • Common: less than 1 in 10 people treated, but more than 1 in 100 people
    • Uncommon: Less than 1 in 100 people but more than 1 in 1,000 people
    • Rare: less than 1 in 1,000 people treated, but more than 1 in 10,000 people
    • Very rare: less than 1 in 10,000 people treated, or unknown
  • possible side effects
    • Ingestion can cause bloating.
    • Intolerance reactions in the form of itching, hives (urticaria), rash, either localized or on the whole body (so-called local or generalized rash), as well as swelling of the skin and mucous membranes, mostly in the facial area (Quincke's edema), shortness of breath and allergic shock were observed .
    • No information can be given on the frequency of these possible side effects.
    • Very rare side effects: yeast penetration into the bloodstream (fungemia)
    • Please tell your doctor or pharmacist if any of the side effects listed affects you significantly or if you notice any side effects not listed.
  • Countermeasures for side effects
    • If you notice any of the above side effects, especially swelling of the mucous membrane in the face (Quincke's edema), shortness of breath or signs of allergic shock, stop taking this medicine and inform (immediately) a doctor so that they can tell you about the severity and any measures that may be necessary can decide.
    • At the first sign of a hypersensitivity reaction, the medicine should not be taken again.
  • If you get any side effects, talk to your doctor or pharmacist. This also applies to side effects that are not specified.

Interactions

  • When taking with other medicines
    • Taking this medicine and medicines for fungal diseases (antifungals) at the same time may affect the effectiveness of this medicine.
    • Note:
      • An increase in blood pressure is possible if monoamine oxidase inhibitors are taken at the same time.
    • Please tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are taking or have recently taken any other medicines, even if they are non-prescription medicines.

Contraindications

  • The medicine should not be taken
    • if you are hypersensitive (allergic) to yeast or any of the other ingredients of this medicine.
    • from immunosuppressed or hospitalized patients (due to severe illness or impaired / weakened immune system),
    • of patients with a central venous catheter.
  • Use in children
    • This medicine should not be used in infants and young children under 2 years of age due to the lack of dose testing.

pregnancy and breast feeding period

  • The widespread use of yeast as food has so far shown no signs of risks in pregnancy and lactation. The results of experimental investigations are not available.
  • Therefore, the drug should not be used during pregnancy and while breastfeeding.

Patient information

  • Take special care with the medicine if the following are true:
    • In the case of diarrhea that lasts longer than 2 days or is accompanied by blood admixtures or an increase in temperature, a doctor should be consulted.
    • In the case of diarrheal diseases, especially in children, the replacement of fluids and salts (electrolytes) is the most important treatment measure. Diarrhea in infants and young children requires consultation with the doctor.
    • If the acne worsens or does not improve, a doctor should be consulted.
    • If microbiological stool examinations are carried out during or shortly after treatment with this medicinal product, the intake should be reported to the examination laboratory, since otherwise false positive results can be produced.
